Avalanche situations, also known as typical avalanche problems, are a basic piece of information that complements the danger rating and allows us to know at a glance what we can expect to find in the mountain: what will the general distribution of avalanches be, what features of the terrain they will be associated with, what observations we can make to assess the problem locally and what the most effective mitigation strategies are.

The European Avalanche Warning Services (EAWS) recommend its use, and most European avalanche services already include this information at the top of the information pyramid, along with the danger rating and location.
